Make a progress S-curve from your period figures

Enter or paste planned, actual, earned and forecast values for each reporting period. The tool adds them up into cumulative curves, shows the variance to plan, and gives you one report image or an Excel table for your monthly report. Everything runs in your browser.

How to use the S-curve generator

  1. Set up the reportEnter the project name and data date. Add a logo if you want it in the report header.
  2. Enter the periodsType the in-period values, or paste rows copied from Excel. Use Add period for more months or weeks.
  3. Choose the curvesShow or hide planned, actual, earned and forecast. The forecast can start from the last actual.
  4. DownloadDownload the report as a PNG image, or export the period and cumulative table to Excel.

What the report shows

S-curves make the progress trend visible across the life of a project. They are used in monthly reports, progress meetings and recovery discussions.

  • Cumulative planned against actual progress
  • Earned value against plan, with the SPI to date
  • Forecast trend from the last actual period
  • In-period bars behind the cumulative curves
  • Variance to plan for each period, in red when behind

Terms used

S-curve
A cumulative curve of progress, cost, hours or quantity over time. It is usually flat at the start and end and steep in the middle.
Planned and actual
Planned is the baseline or target progress for each period. Actual is the progress measured on site.
Earned value
The planned value of the work actually completed. Earned divided by planned gives the schedule performance index (SPI).
Forecast
The expected progress for the remaining periods. With the option on, the forecast curve continues from the cumulative actual at the last period with actual progress.

Short answers for planners, project managers and anyone using the tool for the first time.

Is my project progress data uploaded?

No. The figures stay in your browser. The last table you worked on is kept in this browser's local storage so it is there when you come back, and Clear removes the figures.

Does it read Primavera P6 XER files?

No. You enter or paste the period values. You can take them from a P6 spreadsheet export, an Excel progress sheet or any other report. To work from an XER file directly, use the P6 Program Control Room.

Can I paste my figures from Excel?

Yes. Copy the rows with the columns Period, Planned, Actual, Earned and Forecast, choose Paste from Excel and replace the table. A header row is skipped and missing columns count as zero.

Can I show planned, actual and earned value together?

Yes. Planned, actual, earned value and forecast each have their own curve and in-period bars, and you can switch each one on or off.

What output does the tool create?

A PNG report with a header, summary figures, the chart, the cumulative and in-period tables and a footer. You can also export the table to Excel, with the chart picture below it.
