How it works

How to open an XER file without Primavera P6

Consultants, clients, site teams and claims reviewers often receive an XER without a P6 licence. This viewer gives them a clear, read-only view of the programme in under a minute.

  1. 1

    Get the XER file

Ask the planner for the XER, or export it yourself in P6 with File, Export, Primavera PM (XER), and choose the project.

  2. 2

    Drop it into the viewer

Drag the file onto the box above or click to choose it. It opens in seconds, even with thousands of activities.

  3. 3

    Review and export

Filter to the critical path, open any activity to see its logic, and export the list to Excel for your report or meeting.

What you can see

Everything in the programme, laid out like P6

The layout follows what planners expect from Primavera: WBS bands, activity columns and a Gantt chart with the data date, so nobody has to learn a new tool.

WBS and Gantt chart

Activities grouped by WBS or by any activity code, with bars, milestones, baseline and the data date line. Zoom by week, month or quarter.

Float and critical activities

One click for critical, near critical or negative float activities, with the lowest float and forecast finish against the baseline.

Logic for every activity

Open an activity to see its predecessors and successors with link type, lag and float, and jump along the chain.

Quick schedule checks

Open ends, hard constraints, negative float, long lags, leads and activities that should have started, counted and listed.

Resources and calendars

Every resource with budgeted, actual and remaining units, and each calendar with its working hours per day.

Excel export and raw tables

Export the filtered activities with dates, float and logic to Excel, or browse any table inside the XER file.

The file format

What is an XER file?

XER is the native exchange format of Oracle Primavera P6. It is a plain text file that holds one or more projects as tables: the project, WBS, activities, relationships, calendars, resources, activity codes and user fields.

Contractors submit their baseline and monthly updates as XER files because the receiver can import them into P6 with all the logic intact. Without P6, the file is just rows of tab separated data, which is why a viewer helps.

Privacy

Is it safe to open a live programme here?

Yes. The viewer runs entirely inside your browser. The XER is read from your disk into the page and analysed there; it is never uploaded, stored or shared. Close the tab and it is gone.

  • No account and no tracking of file contents
  • Works offline once the page has loaded
  • Safe for confidential tender and claim programmes
Questions

XER Viewer FAQ

Short answers for planners, consultants and anyone who has received an XER file.

How can I open an XER file without Primavera P6?

Drop the XER file onto the viewer on this page. It reads the file in your browser and shows the WBS, activities, Gantt chart, relationships, float, resources and calendars. You do not need a P6 licence, an account or any installation.

Is my XER file uploaded or stored anywhere?

No. The file is read on your own computer by the page itself. Nothing is sent to a server or saved, so you can open live, tender and claim programmes safely. Closing the tab removes it.

Which versions of Primavera P6 are supported?

Any XER exported from P6 Professional or P6 EPPM. The XER table layout has stayed stable for many versions. If a file has no resources or activity codes, those views are simply left empty.

Can I export the activities to Excel?

Yes. Export to Excel saves the activities you are currently viewing, after any search or filter, with WBS, dates, durations, float, constraints, predecessors, successors and resources. The All tables view can also export any raw XER table.

Can I edit the schedule and save it back to XER?

No. The viewer is read only, which keeps the original programme untouched. Make changes in Primavera P6 and export a new XER.

How do I see the critical path in an XER file?

Use the Critical filter to show open activities with total float at or below zero, or Negative float for activities behind the completion date. To trace the actual driving chains, open the same file in the free P6 Critical Path Finder.

Why is total float blank for some activities?

Completed activities have no total float in Primavera P6, so the viewer shows it as blank. Float for open activities comes straight from the last schedule calculation in the file.

What is the difference between an XER and an XML export from P6?

XER is the native Primavera format and keeps every table the receiver needs to import the project into P6. XML is a more general format used to exchange data with other systems. Contractors usually submit baselines and updates as XER.
